Buxtehude's famous Passacaglia is constructed on the sacred number seven. The bass melody first appears seven times in the fundamental key of D minor. It returns seven times in F major, seven times in A minor and finally seven times in D minor again. Above this motif, played throughout on the pedals, variations are played on the manuals, some chordal and some polyphonic.
Solo instrument the reconstructed 1724 Cahman organ of the Kristine Church in Falun, Sweden.
