Liszt provided a poetic preface to the score, opening with the words: 'What is our life other than a series of preludes to that unknown song, the first, solemn note of which is sounded by death?' The four sections of the symphonic poem reflect what Liszt regarded as the four 'preludes': love, storm, peaceful pastoral life and battle. Outstanding: ClassicsToday.
