Bach, J.S.: Early Cantatas, Vol. 2 (Bwv 12, 18, 61, 161)
This second volume of the Purcell Quartet's survey of Bach's early cantatas turns to Weimar, where Bach served as court organist from 1708 and, after his promotion to Konzertmeister, began writing a new cantata roughly every four weeks. Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen, BWV 12, from April 1714, contains music Bach later reworked as the Crucifixus of the B minor Mass, while Gleichwie der Regen und Schnee vom Himmel fällt, BWV 18, is coloured by an unusually rich viola section and dramatic recitatives woven around the Litany. The Advent cantata Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland, BWV 61, and the serene meditation on death Komm, du süße Todesstunde, BWV 161, complete the programme. Emma Kirkby, Michael Chance, Charles Daniels and Peter Harvey are the soloists, with period instruments including recorders, oboe, trumpet and a continuo organ by Robin Jennings.
