'Classical Kirkby' unites the two worlds of soprano Emma Kirkby, who first read classics at Oxford: a programme of English songs setting the ancient poets – Anacreon, Sappho, Horace, Ovid and their peers. Originally devised for her presidency of the Classical Association, it gathers settings by Henry Lawes, John Blow, John Wilson, Thomas Campion, John Eccles, Nicholas Lanier and William Boyce, drawn from the treasures of the British Library. Henry Lawes's unique settings of ancient Greek, John Blow's virtuoso cantatas after Sappho and Wilson's contemplative Horace odes sit alongside witty songs of love and seduction. Accompanied on the lute by Anthony Rooley, Kirkby proves this millennia-old poetry as fresh today as when it was first written.
