J.S. Bach - Cantatas, Vol.3 (BWV 12, 54, 162, 182)
The four Weimar cantatas on this disc represent Bach at an early but already formidable creative peak. 'Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen' BWV12 (1714) opens with a sinfonia and an imposing chorus built over a chromatic ground bass — a device Bach would return to in the Crucifixus of the B minor Mass. BWV54 'Widerstehe doch der Sünde' is a dramatic alto cantata exhorting resistance to sin. BWV162 'Ach! Ich sehe, itzt, da ich zur Hochzeit gehe' is an allegory of the soul as wedding guest. BWV182 'Himmelskönig, sei willkommen', a Palm Sunday cantata, opens with a spacious sinfonia and includes some of Bach's most inspired early choral writing. Together they form a remarkable portrait of a young composer already in complete command of his art.
