Scarlatti's Griselda, premiered in Rome in 1721, received a single performance at the Teatro Capranica, and was never taken into the repertoire elsewhere, both for financial reasons and because of the changing tastes of the time. The tragic story of King Gualtiero, who makes his wife Griselda, a commoner, undergo cruel trials in order to demonstrate her steadfastness and thus prove to his people that her nobility of virtue far surpasses the nobility of birth they demand, was provided with a classical happy ending by the librettist Apostolo Zeno. La Griselda de Scarlatti, créée en 1721 à Rome, ne fut jouée qu'une seule fois au Teatro Capranica, et ne rentra jamais au répertoire ailleurs, pour des raisons relevant à la fois de son coût extravagant et de la transformation des goûts de l'époque. L'histoire tragique du roi Gualtiero, qui fait subir des épreuves cruelles à sa femme roturière Griselda afin de démontrer sa constance, et donc de prouver à son peuple que sa noblesse de cœur vaut bien plus que la noblesse de naissance que celui-ci exige, fut pourvue d'un happy end classique par le librettiste Apostolo Zeno. Scarlattis Griselda, 1721 in Rom uraufgeführt, blieb ein Solitär in der Geschichte des Teatro Capranica und wurde auch andernorts aus finanziellen Gründen und wegen des veränderten Zeitgeschmacks nicht ins Repertoire übernommen. Die tragische Geschichte, die vom König Gualtiero, der seine unadlige Gattin Griselda vor grausame Prüfungen stellt, um seinem Volk ihre Standhaftigkeit zu beweisen und so zu belegen, dass ihr Tugendadel höher zu werten ist als der eingeforderte Geburtsadel, handelt, ist vom Librettisten Apostolo Zeno mit einem klassischen Happyend versehen worden.
